Presidential Pets

Throughout history, many American presidents and their families have had an affinity for pets. By owning and caring for pets, the presidential office takes on a humane aspect that we can admire regardless of our political beliefs.

When we think of pets, we usually think of dogs, cats and birds. We typically don't expect people to keep hippos, alligators and badgers in their homes.

Mockingbird: Thomas Jefferson brought a Mockingbird with him when he moved into the White House.

Alligator: John Quincy Adams owned an Alligator. His wife was also fond of Silk Worms

Tiger : Martin Van Buren had two tiger cubs during his term in office.

Goat: William Henry Harrison brought a Billy Goat and a Cow to the White House. Benjamin Harrison also owned a Billy Goat named His Whiskers.

Pig: Honest Abe Lincoln had a Pig, Goats, a Turkey and several Cats and Dogs.

Mice: Mice were Andrew Johnson's favorite pets.

Hippo: Calvin Coolidge had a Pigmy Hippo, Lion Cubs, a Wallaby and a Bear.

Dog: The following are some of the more recent political pooches:

• FDR's Scottish Terrier was named Fala.

• Checkerswas Richard Nixon's dog when he was the VP.

• Libertywas a Golden Retriever who belonged to Gerald Ford.

• Jimmy Carter's dog was called Grits.

• Ronald Reagan's Bouvier des Flandres sheep dog was named Lucky and his Charles Spaniel was called Rex.

• Milliewas the English Springer Spaniel who lived with George Bush. Her puppy Rexalso joined the Bushes at the White House.

• Bill and Hillary Clinton owned a Chocolate Labrador Retriever named Buddy.

• George W. Bush's dogs include a Scottish terrier named Barney and an English springer spaniel named Spot. Spot passed away in 2004 with the distinction of being the only dog to live in the White House during two different administrations. Spot was born to George H.W. Bush's dog Millie, then returned with the George W. Bush's administration.

Cat: The following are some feline friends of recent White House families:

• Shanwas Susan Ford's Siamese cat while her father was in office.

• Misty Malarky Ying Yangwas the name of the Siamese cat who belonged to the Carters

• George W. Bush's cat, India, has been with the family for over 10 years and is nicknamed "Willie."

• The black and white cat who lived in the White House during the Clinton Administration was called Socks.

Misc:

  • President Bush keeps a longhorn cow named Ofelia on his ranch in Crawford, Texas. The cow is named after a beloved staff member who worked with Bush when he was the Governor of Texas.
