Make Your New Year's Eve Party a Celebration!

R ather than going out to a club or restaurant, many people enjoy spending New Year's Eve with friends and family at home. Here are some easy New Year's Eve celebration ideas to help you and your loved ones ring in the New Year in style:

New Year's Eve Decor
To put your guests in the mood for the New Year, consider these decorating tips when you throw a New Year's Eve Party:

  • Decorate your home or the party area with streamers, stars and confetti in festive colors.
  • Fill black plastic top hats and margarita and martini glasses with pretzels, chips and other party snacks.
  • Inflate some silver and black balloons, pile them up throughout the room and allow them to float freely as your guests mix and mingle.
  • Use silver and gold plates, cups and napkins.

You will most likely find most of the above-mentioned New Year's party supplies at your local party-supply store.

Preparing Food for Your New Year's Eve Party
When deciding what to serve at your bash, consider these New Year's party ideas:

  • Setting up a buffet might be the most convenient way to feed your guests. This way, you can make the food in advance and enjoy the festivities and guests during the party.
  • As a simpler alternative, you may decide to prepare an array of appetizers to serve to your guests. Most appetizers can be made ahead of time, and your guests will enjoy sampling a variety of foods.
  • If most of your guests plan to arrive after they have eaten dinner, you can offer them a selection of delicious desserts instead of heavier fare.

Whatever you decide to do, remember to chill your champagne or sparkling cider for the midnight toast!

Games for Your New Year's Eve Party
To add to the fun of your New Year's Eve celebration, you might want to include one or more of the follwing party games to entertain your guests while you wait for the ball to drop:

  • A Board Game Tournament (for 15 or more players): Divide your guests into groups of four or five and have them play different board games. Give the players points depending on where they finish (four points for first place, three points for second place, etc.). Finally, when every participant has played each game, add up eveyone's points. The person with the most points is the winner.
  • Charades (for four or more players): Prior to the party, select some of the top news stories from the past year and write them down on slips of paper. When your guests arrive, divide them into teams and have people select pieces of paper to determine what news stories they will have to act out for their teammates to guess. Charades is a game of pantomines, so remind players that they aren't allowed to speak while acting out their events. The team to guess the most events correctly wins.
  • Name the Month (for four or more players): Research 20 news events from the past year and have your visitors guess the month when each one took place. When they have finished guessing, the person with the most correct answers wins a prize.
  • Guess My Resolution (for four or more players): Ask each participant to write down five New Year's resolutions on separate pieces of paper and place them in a jar. Next, pull each slip of paper out of the jar and read it aloud. As you read them, ask your guests to write down the name of the person they think made that particular resolution. When you have gone through all of the resolutions, add up the player's correct answers. The person who has made the most correct guesses wins a prize.
