Let Your Imagination Shine with Alternative Christmas Trees

Considering some alternatives to putting up the traditional Christmas tree this holiday season? Why not showcase your imagination and holiday spirit using alternative Christmas trees and decorations?

Depending on your style and preference, these Christmas tree substitutes offer a fresh, creative look for the holidays. Plus, these Christmas tree alternatives can often last beyond the season or even be stored for next year.

Alternative Christmas Trees
Choosing the best alternatives to Christmas trees can be as simple as decorating a small, potted evergreen or shrub. Live, potted miniature trees offer the smell and look of Christmas, but, unlike traditional Christmas trees, you can plant them after the holiday season. Miniature trees are also easy to decorate and are a good choice if you don't have enough space for a large Christmas tree. You can find mini evergreens at most nurseries and even at some Christmas tree lots.

A potted Rosemary bush is also a great option and will give your place a nice holiday smell. You can find small rosemary trees already potted at your local nursery or garden center. Some nurseries even offer wreaths and topiaries made out of Rosemary for the holidays. Because rosemary is easy to grow, you can plant and grow it both before and after the holidays.

Potted Rosemary or miniature evergreen trees can be decorated with ornaments and displayed on tables in any room, offering a festive look for the holidays.

If you don't have the cash or time to stop at a nursery or garden center, you can transform almost any indoor plant into a Christmas tree. Tall indoor plants, such as ficus trees, are perfect for decorations. Adorn these plants with ornaments, garland or strings of lights. You can also tie ribbons on branches or hang glitter or colorful yarn off the leaves. Add a final holiday touch by wrapping the pot with colorful paper or foil and tying a large red velvet bow around it.

Christmas Tree Substitutes
Tired of evergreens at Christmas? If so, you have plenty of colorful options: Artificial Christmas trees come in all colors and materials.

When shopping for a metallic tree made from aluminum, you'll find a choice of silver, gold, red and even pink and fluorescent blue. Popular in the 1950s and 1960s, aluminum Christmas trees were made from aluminum-coated paper and are still sold today in vintage stores. Try one of these alternative Christmas trees for a funky, retro holiday look.

Decorate aluminum trees with care, as they are highly flammable and were never intended to be used in conjunction with Christmas lights. When first introduced, aluminum Christmas trees were sold with a rotating color wheel that sat on the floor at the base of the tree to spotlight the tree with colorful light.

Tinsel trees, another artificial option, also come in a variety of colors. Unlike aluminum trees, these can be used safely with lights.

You can find moreChristmas tree substitutes by making a trip to the crafts store. Here are directions for making your own holiday tree:

  1. Purchase a Styrofoam cone.
  2. Secure the cone to a foam or wooden base.
  3. Use glue or stick pins to cover the cone with ribbons, feathers or plastic fruit.

You could also wrap green felt around it and cover with photos, Christmas cards or other holiday items.

Christmas Decorations
Any variety of Christmas decorations can make ideal alternatives to Christmas trees. String ornaments over a doorway or across a wall. Or use pieces of Rosemary branches, oranges and other fruit to create displays on counter tops that will fill the room with a heart-warming holiday scent. Cherry blossom branches also make a nice Christmas look: Arrange them in a vase that you've surrounded with wrapped presents or cards.

You can also hang clusters of holly berries throughout your house for a nice holiday feel. Some stores even sell holiday-scented potpourri that you can place in festive bowls or vases to create the smell of Christmas without the traditional tree.

Use your imagination and holiday spirit this season, and you'll find the alternative Christmas tree options are endless!
