Simple and Elegant Christmas Decorating Ideas

Decorating for Christmas doesn't have to be expensive. In fact, simple Christmas decorations are often the most elegant and attractive. A few well-chosen decorations carefully placed tend to have more appeal than lots of glitzy decorations carelessly scattered about. For example, a simple vase of flowers or an arrangement of snow globes can impart holiday color and add holiday cheer to any home.

Christmas Decorating Ideas for Inside the Home
Here are some easy ideas for decorating for Christmas inside your home:

  • Arrange candles of varying sizes in a glass platter with the underside painted gold. This makes an attractive centerpiece for a dinner table.
  • Arrange ornamental Christmas tree ornaments in bowls or on platters as a creative alternative to displaying them on your tree.
  • Arrange red and white flowers in simple vases around your home to add color and a festive spirit. Roses or carnations are lovely choices.
  • Display pinecones with gold-painted tips in a bowl. With ribbons attached, they make beautiful tree ornaments.
  • Place children's holiday pop-up books on your table as lively centerpieces.
  • Tie with gold, green or red ribbons around silverware or wine glasses to make festive and simple holiday place settings.

Christmas Lawn Decorations
With so many different kinds of Christmas lawn decorations and decorations for the exterior of your home, it's easy to get carried away! Here are some simple and elegant ideas for decorating for Christmas outside your home:

  • Wrap potted plants of varying sizes in red or green foil and display them on your porch or by your front door.
  • Fill empty pots, urns or planter boxes with real or faux holiday greenery. For an extra touch, add Christmas lights.
  • If you have a birdbath, fill it with a casual but attractive blend of greenery and shiny decorative materials.
  • Put plain white paper on your front door and place a large red bow on top. Leave red and green pens nearby for visitors to sign in and leave holiday wishes.

Build an Arbor of Christmas Lights
If you have a walkway leading to the front of your house, you can make a beautiful arbor of lights to illuminate the path to your front door. It'll take a little work. Yet, once you gather the materials, the result will be a beautiful, natural-looking alternative to plastic, store-bought decorations. Here's how to make one:

  • Select about eight to 10 trees (about 9 feet tall) with small trunks (1 inch to 2 inches in diameter). Choose ones that have lots of branches.
  • Dig holes on both sides of the walkway leading to your door, being sure to space the holes evenly apart and to dig them directly across the path from each other. The holes should be just large enough to fit the trees.
  • Put the trees in the holes, placing dirt around them to keep them securely in place.
  • Bend the tops of the trees to join them to the tree directly across the walk. Securely tie the tops together with twine.
  • Weave the branches together to form walls to your canopy.
  • Arrange clear lights within the trees to illuminate the shape of the canopy.

Creating and arranging a few simple Christmas decorations for the inside and outside of your home is fun and easy. And, it's a great way to get in the spirit of the holidays!
