Holiday Cookie Exchanges Add to the Season's Fun

Christmas cookie swaps are a great way to experience the fun of baking, sharing and sampling holiday cookies. Not only does a holiday cookie exchange take less time than baking many sets of different cookies, but it is also less work and more fun, as you swap recipes with others. Cookie parties provide a wonderful chance for you to gather with family and friends for the holidays.

Baking Christmas cookies is a seasonal tradition that often requires a lot of time and attention. As a result, you may find it hard to get all of your baking done, especially with busy holiday schedules. For example, baking two or three different types of holiday cookies requires purchasing multiple ingredients, mixing each batch of dough and standing watch as each tray of cookies bakes in the oven. This can be a lot of work for just one person! Planning and hosting a holiday cookie exchange party is a smart way to keep this tradition fun.

What is a Cookie Exchange?
A holiday cookie exchange can be as simple as a group of friends meeting at someone's house to share the cookies they've baked. Exchanges can either be casual get-togethers or elaborate parties planned months in advance.

While some cookie swaps are last minute, many are annual traditions with specific rules for everyone attending. Guests may be asked to bake a specific cookie or bring an appetizer for the group to share. Some exchanges welcome homemade candy or any other types of festive baked goods. Christmas cookie swaps often have all the elements of a holiday party: guests, music, festive decorations, food and drinks.

The common purpose of all Christmas cookie swaps is the chance to sample and share a variety of holiday cookies and treats with others who also enjoy the experience of holiday baking.

Hosting a Holiday Cookie Exchange
If you're considering hosting a cookie exchange party this holiday season, remember there are no set rules. However, here are a few basic guidelines that will help make your party a success:

  • Make a guest list well in advance : Once you have determined how many guests you'll invite, send out the invitations early enough to give your guests enough time to plan what they'll bake. While some hosts send creative invitations weeks in advance, even a few days notice and some phone calls can ensure that your guests will be ready.

You'll want to invite at least five people to ensure there are enough cookies to sample. Most exchanges have eight to 12 guests to ensure the best mix of cookies and conversation.
  • Make sure your guests know what to bring : Guests should bake at least a dozen cookies per person invited to the event and bring copies of their recipes with them. It's also smart to ask your guests to bake extra cookies (perhaps one dozen extra) for everyone to sample during the holiday cookie exchange.
  • Remember people's schedules : When deciding when to host your cookie exchange, take into consideration your guests' schedules, as well as the kind of food and drinks you'll want to serve. While some hosts prefer mornings and like to serve coffee, juice, milk and pastries, others like to host the event at night and serve holiday cocktails and appetizers.
  • Stock up on supplies beforehand : Remember to have paper plates, plastic bags or plastic wrap available for anyone who forgets to bring a container to carry their cookies home.
  • Host the exchange in an open space : Use a central table or counter, lined with plates, to display each guest's cookies.
  • Organize how guests will present their cookies : One suggestion is to start the cookie exchange by choosing a guest to present the first cookie batch to the group. This is where the fun begins, as guests describe the traditions behind the cookies or any baking mishaps they encountered trying to get their samples to the exchange.
  • Take pictures : Don't forget to take photos during your Christmas cookie swap. You can share these memories with your guests or use the photos as invitations for next season.
