An Overview of American Politics Politics in America is a truly remarkable reflection of our priorities as a people and a nation. Right wing and left wing politics in this country have evolved over the centuries and were born of the age-old struggle for power between rich and poor. Under the democratic system of government developed by the founding fathers of the United States, people fight for their beliefs and power in the United States by voting in national elections. In these elections, people vote for the congressmen, senators and presidents who most closely represent their interests and priorities in life. The Three Branches of American Government The system of American government comprises three branches that share power and work both with and against each other to promote and preserve the constitutionally guaranteed rights of every citizen. The three branches of government are as follows: the Executive branch, which comprises the office of the president of the United States and his/her delegates the Judiciary branch, represented by the U.S. Supreme Court the Legislative branch, which comprises the U.S. Congress (the House of Representatives and the Senate). It is through these three competing branches of government that a system of checks and balances promotes the functioning of the country. Republicans vs. Democrats There are two predominant political parties in the United States: the Republicans and the Democrats. The fundamental differences between the two parties arise largely from the ancient clash between the rich and the working classes, though today's socioeconomic lines are now more blurred. Left Wing Political Ideas Left wing politics has its roots in the labor movement, where workers organized to achieve better salaries and benefits from employers. Today, however, left wing political ideas have grown to champion environmental causes, civil rights and social welfare concerns. As left wing politics evolved, it became less labor-focused and more socially active. This is why conservatives often describe "left wingers" as "socialists." However, "progressive" or "liberal" is the label preferred by most modern "lefties". Right Wing Political Ideas Right wing (also known as conservative) politics is rooted in the upper class, which fights to retain wealth and power gained through inheritance, entrepreneurial activity and investment risk. But right wing politics has also grown to encompass other issues, such as reducing taxes, outlawing abortion and promoting religious values within the society. The Battle for Control in American Politics The natural and eternal battle for power in American politics boils down to right wing politicians who fight to conserve wealth and traditional social values and left wing politicians who fight for social change and a more balanced distribution of wealth among the poor and middle class. Left-wing and right-wing politics in the U.S. are a natural reflection of age-old struggles. However, the flat playing field of our democracy is how everyone's interests are accounted for over time while the constitutional rights of all citizens are preserved.
