Environmental charities do some amazing work to protect the environment we live in. Some green charities promote conservation and sustainable management of land, water, plant and energy resources. Others combat pollution and develop more efficient uses of energy and waste materials. Some environmental charities even purchase land. All of them have something in common. When most people think of giving to an environmental charity, they think of a cash donation. Giving money to a green charity is a wonderful way to support their cause, and receive a great tax deduction. While money is always appreciated by environmental charities, if you're short on cash, you can give to your favorite green charity in several other ways.

Many environmental charities are just as grateful to receive donated goods as they are cash. Do you have an old filing cabinet or printer in good condition that you no longer need? Items like these can really help local green charities. Some will even take your car as a donation. Since the needs of individual environmental charities can change often, you should first call to ask about their needs. Many green charities publish a list of needed items for donation, and can send you a copy upon request. Some donated items may also qualify as a tax deduction for you.

Another way to help an environmental charity is to donate your time. The time you give is time the organization doesn’t have to pay someone else to put in. To ensure the green charity you choose is a responsible one, take the time to ask questions about their programs, mission and goals before you decide to support them. The Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator, recommends asking these questions of a green charity before giving:
  • Can the charity clearly communicate who they are and what they do?
  • Can the charity define their short-term and long-term goals?
  • Can the charity tell you the progress it has made toward its goal?
  • Do the charity's programs make sense to you?
  • Can you trust the charity?
  • Are you willing to make a long-term commitment to the organization?
